Emperor Frederick I (Barbarossa) 100,000 man crusader army dwarfed that of the combined forces of Coeur de Lion (the French speaking English King Richard I) and Philip II of France during the Third Crusade.

Barbarossa’s victories against Saladin’s armies at Philiomelium and Iconium greatly weakened the Saracens and without these victories Richard’s men would have faced an even more formidable foe in their quest to retake the Holy Land and Jerusalem.
